Update Five
Mens 200m free:
Phelps by a mile. The w/o Phelps markets are more interesting and are priced up as a two-horse race between Park and Vanderkaay. I'm not so sure. Vanderkaay clocked the fastest time but was well back in the 400m. Park won the 400m gold but was nowhere near the record he claimed he was going to take away from Thorpe. Basson was the only man to come through the first semi, easing down in the last leg to post the third fastest time. He has broken 1:46 at South African trials, again when miles ahead, so I'm inclined to believe he will have something left in the tank when he has competition. Anything above 5.5 is worth taking.
1pt Basson, without Phelps market, at 8.0 Ladbrokes, (take down to 5.5)
Womens 100 Backstroke
Absolute race in two - Coventry and Coughlin. Coventry's form in the 400IM has held up, she broke the WR in the semi with a 'reduced tempo'. Coughlin held the WR and won this battle in Athens, but has swum many more meets this year and been stuck in the 59s. She may have been holding something back because of her busy schedule, but Coventry is swimming a similar schedule without problems. I think Coventry will win it, but I'd be happy to lay her at 1.33 if the price got that short.
No bet.
Mens 100 Backstroke
A month ago, you'd have said how far Peirsol? This time, the gold medallist will have to break the world record and mightn't necessarily be Peirsol. Greivers, Stoeckel and Vyatchanin are right on his hammer. But Peirsol has a long history of cruising through the heats and semis and then turning it right on in the final. There aren't that many when he has gone hard early on. He'll turn on the gas here and break the WR in the process.
4pts Peirsol 2.0 IASBet, Ladbrokes, TAB, Lasseters (take down to 1.85)
Womens 100 Breastroke
Leisel has miles on these. If Efimova can repeat her heat swim, she can win the w/o Jones market but not too keen at the prices.
